Use a variable with whitespace in it's name in an expression

Is it possible to use a variable with a whitespace in it's name as a valid expression value?

i.e. my variable name is "The variable" and my expression is:
The variable * 2

How can I tell FLEE that "The variable" is one single value?

I tried something like {The variable} * 2 or [The variable] * 2 but no avail.

I've had to do a similar thing to this, so in my code I enforced braces around field names, like {My Balance} so I could determine what was a field name, then I used a lookup table of GUIDs for each variable.

So when FLEE needed a variable it referred to it by something like var_6E211AC30BDF4E09BD8F5931591AEFAE which of course contains no spaces.
I didn't find the performance hit to be anything to worry about.

Hope this is of some use.
